Prerequisites:

Some devices require understanding of computer and smartphone basics and the use of a web browser or a mobile app in order to install and update.

Description:

As technology evolves, learn how you can make monitoring your health easier with the latest health devices. You will see what technology devices are available for use in your home to monitor and improve your health and safety. Learn the benefits of specific models and get recommendations from the instructor. You will also get hands-on experience with some devices and see how they work. For the more complex devices, you will learn the basics on how to configure them using a computer or mobile device.

Goals:

  • Learn about the growing field of health and safety technology devices
  • Discuss security and privacy issues of health information on the devices
  • Learn how to use devices that measure your health (blood pressure monitor, weight scale) and connect them to your phone for easy data tracking
  • Learn how a pill reminder system can tell you when to take your medications so you don’t have to remember to take them
  • Learn about how devices can help you if you need emergency assistance from a friend or 911 emergency services

Note: All devices are intended for consumers and have a cost. Some costs may have an ongoing subscription. Any health information received should be discussed with the patient's doctor. This is not a medical class teaching health care. It is a class to learn about technology. For devices and features that use a smartphone, the iPhone will be used as the example in class. The devices will all work with Android phones too.
